Soft Skills vs Being Soft
I have come across an interesting complaint by an experienced professional that By learning soft-skills we have become really soft and people are taking advantage.
This was a realization that many of us have misunderstood soft-skills are about being soft.
Is it really about talking/writing softly and going to a non-reaction mode? I do not think so
I would say that soft-skill is to know how to say what and when to whom.
If shouting is the only way out. Go for it, if you think that works and the results/consequences are worth the effort. But remember, the analysis of the pros and cons and the decision-making, within no time, is something that we have to achieve.
And how do we know this?
As usual, life is a place where we do it first and then learn. Try and try and put some analysis and be ready for next time.
And the solution is not generic. It depends on what you are, your knowledge, your abilities, your experience and your emotions too.
I would say the best way to enhance your soft-skills would be...
1. Understand yourselves
- Analyse the situations that you handled/managed situations very well, worse and normally
- Understand your strengths and weakness
- Identify the areas you can improve and find ways for it.
2. Learn to control your emotions
- Emotion is something that you don't have any control. But you always have a control on how much to show. It is not easy but constantly talk to yourself so that you can improve situation by situation.
3. Enhance your abilities and knowledge
- If your vocabulary is not good, read more.
- If you voice control is not good, close your door and talk to the mirror.
- If you lack competency learn more.
4. Gain experience
- Be always available for opportunities. Expose yourselves to the situations around. Don't close your door so that opportunities have to knock.
Btw, there is another component that contributes to the ladder of success.
Understand what matters to those who really matters in your growth. Blindly/Senselessly follow it. That is what they call work smart.
